For children growing up in low-income families, financial hardship can often determine not only what they have, but also which opportunities are within their reach. Caritas Poland’s scholarship programs are designed to help close that gap, providing support both for children who need assistance with everyday school expenses and for young people whose talents might otherwise remain undeveloped.
Wings
Through its “Wings” program, Caritas Poland provides financial assistance to children from low-income families. The funds can be used to cover the costs of clothing, school lunches, class trips, tutoring and extracurricular activities. The aim is to enable children to participate fully in school life and enjoy the same opportunities as their classmates, regardless of their family’s financial situation.
Two Talents
The “Two Talents” program focuses specifically on gifted children and young people whose parents cannot afford the costs associated with developing their abilities. Scholarships can finance additional courses, participation in competitions and themed camps, as well as the purchase of musical instruments, sportswear and art supplies.
For some recipients, the support makes it possible to pursue ambitions that would otherwise be difficult to sustain.
Recipients
Sixteen-year-old Hubert is a keen kayaker who has already achieved numerous successes in national competitions. He is also a member of the Polish junior national team. His “Two Talents” scholarship has helped him pay for additional training and purchase the specialized clothing required for the sport.
Seventeen-year-old Maja discovered drawing when she was five. For the past three years, she has attended an architectural drawing school in Kielce, around 100 kilometers from her family home. She travels to classes every weekend and regularly takes part in competitions, where she has achieved success. Her scholarship helps pay for art materials and travel to drawing workshops.
Mateusz Lewczuk, a fourth-year student at a technical school specializing in food and catering services, has developed his talents in both culinary arts and sport. He has taken part in numerous culinary competitions and finished among the top three in the “Niepodległa Polska Smakuje” competition in Augustów.
At the same time, Mateusz is a successful handball and futsal player. He and his team have secured top places in local tournaments. Coming from a very low-income family, he was selected by his school as a candidate for a Caritas Poland scholarship under the “Two Talents” program, giving him the opportunity to continue developing his interests.
Statistics
The recipients of Caritas Poland’s scholarship programs come from a wide range of backgrounds. The largest group consists of students aged between 11 and 16, with 13-year-olds representing the largest single age group. Girls account for 56% of scholarship recipients, while boys make up 44%.
The programs also reach children and young people living in communities of different sizes. The residential structure of scholarship recipients is broadly balanced, with approximately one-third coming from small towns and cities, one-third from medium-sized cities and one-third from large urban areas.
This year, more than 1,000 children and young people received scholarships through the “Two Talents” and “Wings” programs. In total, Caritas Poland has supported more than 16,000 people through the two initiatives, allocating PLN 25 million, or approximately EUR 6 million, to the programs.
For the children and young people involved, the scholarships are more than financial assistance. They can mean access to training, equipment, competitions and educational opportunities that allow young talents to continue developing despite the financial circumstances of their families.
