The catastrophic flooding in Nepal has left hundreds missing and thousands in need of assistance, while many affected areas remain difficult to reach. “The situation is very, very sad,” says Sr. Cecilia Durga Shrestha, Director of Caritas Nepal. Caritas Poland has joined efforts to support those affected. “In such dramatic moments, what people need most is the reassurance that they are not alone,” stresses Fr. Janusz Majda.

Cut Off from Aid

The flash flood that struck northern Nepal on August 26 destroyed homes, shops, roads, bridges and energy infrastructure. In Rasuwa District, near the border with China, the situation is particularly difficult. The death toll has exceeded 500, while hundreds of people are still considered missing.

As a result, the mountainous terrain and the scale of the destruction mean that many communities cannot be reached by land.
“Bridges and main roads have collapsed, so we are unable to reach the disaster-affected areas,” Sr. Cecilia Durga Shrestha told Vatican News. Caritas Nepal is searching for alternative ways to reach those in need. Among other efforts, it has managed to provide assistance to more than 430 people who have taken shelter in a school.

Caritas Poland Launches Support

Caritas Poland has joined the relief effort and will provide assistance through Caritas Nepal, with which it has been cooperating for more than a decade.

“The funds collected will be used first to meet the most urgent needs – food, clean water, medical supplies and hygiene products. In such dramatic moments, what those affected need most is the reassurance that they are not alone. The Caritas community stands with them,” says Fr. Janusz Majda, Director of Caritas Poland.

On the ground, Caritas has opened a kitchen that is expected to provide food for 300 families over the next 15 days. It is also preparing deliveries of food and other essential supplies. Assistance includes clothing, blankets, tents, and medicines, as well as medical care, particularly for pregnant women and mothers with young children.
