On December 4th, Pope Francis encouraged the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth to expand their efforts to support families displaced or forced to flee their countries. The meeting, which took place at the Vatican, highlighted the congregation’s dedication to helping families in need worldwide.
A Mission of Service
Pope Francis underscored the importance of the Nazareth Sisters’ global mission during the audience. „May your communities always be 'thresholds’ in and through which those families that are the focus of your charism can find refuge, hope, and peace in Christ our Saviour,” the Pope said. He emphasized the need to continue assisting families displaced or uprooted from their homes, offering practical aid and spiritual solace.
Sister Angela Marie Mazzeo, the congregation’s Superior General, presented Pope Francis with a symbolic „spiritual bouquet” during the meeting. This gesture symbolized the sisters’ prayers and charitable acts dedicated to those in need, highlighting their profound spiritual and practical commitment to service.
Relics of the Martyrs of Nowogródek Honored in Rome
On December 3rd, a day before the papal audience, a special ceremony took place at the Basilica of St. Bartholomew on Tiber Island in Rome. Organized by Adam Kwiatkowski, Poland’s Ambassador to the Holy See, the event included the installation of relics of the Blessed Martyr Sisters of Nowogródek.
These eleven Sisters were executed by Nazi forces on August 1st, 1943, sacrificing their lives to save 120 prisoners, including many fathers of families. Their martyrdom has become a powerful symbol of selfless love and devotion to others. In 2000, Pope John Paul II beatified the sisters, further cementing their legacy of faith and courage.
Global Outreach and Support for Migrants
The Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth currently includes over 1,000 Sisters serving in 14 countries across five continents. Their ministries range from running schools and universities to organizing formation programs for families and providing extensive charitable outreach.
One of their standout missions is supporting Polish families living abroad, many of whom face unique challenges as immigrants. The Sisters work tirelessly to provide guidance, spiritual nourishment, and practical aid to those struggling far from home.
Looking Ahead to the Future
The congregation’s 150th-anniversary celebrations, which began on December 1st, offer a time for reflection on their rich history and a renewed focus on their future mission. Pope Francis’ words of encouragement reaffirmed the vital role the Sisters of Nazareth play in fostering communities rooted in love, faith, and solidarity.
Through the dedication of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth, Polish families and many others around the world find the support and assistance they need to navigate daily life. Their unwavering commitment to service continues to transform lives, offering hope to those most in need.
